Europe's Sanitation Problem - final Report of the Stockholm Water Week

Organisation: WECF
WECF (Women in Europe for a Common Future) together with the partner organizations Global Water Partnership CEE, Coalition Clean Baltic, Hamburg University of Technology, Creative Slovakia, Earth Forever Bulgaria, EuroTeleorman Romania, hereby send you the report of the seminar “Europe’s Sanitation Problem – 20 million Europeans need access to Safe and Affordable Sanitation”, which was held on 19th of August 2008 during the Stockholm World Water Week. Main conclusions of the seminar were that: - Current EU directives do not give enough incentives to member states to make rural sanitation a priority - The European Commission sees this as a problem which needs to be solved at national level - the focus is too much on costly traditional sewerage solutions mainly for larger towns - there is lack of capacity and local knowledge for solving the rural sanitation problems - Experts presented various alternative systems including systems that recycle nutrients from waste-water - The Commission plans an upgrade of the EU guide on small scale (extensive wastewater treatment processes) sanitation Questions which need to be posed by the EP and the Commission are: - Do we need a clean water supply obligation in an EU directive? - Do we need waste water legislation for settlements with less than 2000 inhabitants?
