Last Chance for Living Wetlands Award

  12/01/2010
CIWEM is calling for all projects that demonstrate a sustainable use of wetland habitats to enter the Living Wetlands Award. The award closes on the 22nd January and the prize consists of the Mance Memorial Trophy, publicity for the winning scheme, a framed certificate and a cheque for GBP1,500. The Award will be presented at the CIWEM World Wetlands Day Conference in February and announced at CIWEM's Annual Dinner in May.

Each year, CIWEM receives an amazing diversity of entries to the award, from energy companies to wildlife trusts and local authorities. To be eligible for the award, projects must contribute to the delivery of priority UK Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) species and habitat targets for wetlands; demonstrate sustainability and delivery of multiple benefits e.g. flood alleviation, wastewater treatment, recreation, eco-tourism, water resource security; and ensure no priority BAP species or habitats are harmed by the project.

Past winners have included the river restoration project STREAM (STrategic REstoration and Management of the River Avon) supported by the European Commission's LIFE-Nature fund, Natural England, Environment Agency, Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and Wessex Water, and the Environment Agency's restoration of the River Quaggy.

Justin Taberham, CIWEM's Director of Policy and LWA judge, says: "Every year CIWEM's awards celebrate the important work that environmentalists do, honouring those making outstanding contributions to environmental management. I urge all projects involved in sustainable wetland management to enter the Living Wetlands Award, as it is one of the most effective ways for professionals and organisations to stand out from the crowd and make an impression on the environmental industry."
