World Toilet Day 19th November

  10/11/2009
World Toilet Day was established on 19 November 2001 by the World Toilet Organisation. Celebrated annually, it seeks to increase awareness of the importance of toilet sanitation and each individual's right to a safe and hygienic sanitary environment.

The World Toilet Organisation (WTO) is a global non-profit organisation committed to improving toilet and sanitation conditions worldwide. WTO is also one of the few organisations to focus on toilets instead of water, which receives more attention and resources under the common subject of sanitation. Founded in 2001 with 15 members, it now has 215 member organisations in 57 countries working towards eliminating the toilet taboo and delivering sustainable sanitation.

WTO was created as a global network and service platform where all toilet and sanitation organisations can learn from one another and leverage on media and global support that in turn can influence governments to promote sound sanitation and public health policies.

WTO is the organiser of the very successful series of World Toilet Summits and World Toilet Expo & Forum. To date, eight World Toilet Summits and two World Toilet Expo & Forums have been hosted in ten different cities around the world. Each summit addresses the critical issues of toilet and sanitation from technologies, development and funding to design, maintenance, social entrepreneurship, capacity building, research and various other related topics, creating massive media coverage and momentum.

This year, Unilever's Domestos will be the inaugural sponsor of World Toilet Day and will work together with the WTO to bring attention to the issue of worldwide sanitation. The combined authority and expertise of the WTO and Unilever will help to improve the lives of those affected by poor sanitation and increase access to hygienically clean toilets around the world.

Hydrogenic City 2020 Project

Water is often taken from ecologically vulnerable areas. This movie is proposing an initiative to create a network of ecologically sensitive and aestetically compelling water reclamation centres, so the waterworks infrastructure gets a public dimension as they are integrated in the local community and serve more than one purpose.
