Carbon-Neutral Wastewater Treatment Plant

  12/10/2009
On 1st October 2009, Bernard Brochand, chairman of the Syndicat intercommunal d'assainissement unifié du bassin cannois (SIAUBC) and Deputy and Mayor of Cannes, Isabelle Kocher, Chief Executive Officer of Lyonnaise des Eaux and Bernard Guirkinger, Senior Executive Vice President of SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT, in the presence of Claude Serra (sub-prefect for the Grasse District), laid the first stone for Aquaviva, the future wastewater treatment plant for the Cannes Basin.

Aquaviva wastewater treatment plant

Aquaviva will treat wastewater from eight districts in the Cannes Basin: Auribeau sur Siagne, Cannes, Le Cannet, Mandelieu, Mougins, Pégomas, La Roquette sur Siagne and Théoule sur Mer. Designed in line with high-quality environmental (HQE) standards, the future wastewater treatment plant, with a capacity of 300,000 inhabitant equivalents, represents a genuine technological and environmental achievement.

Aquaviva's Bilan Carbone review will show that it is carbon neutral. Indeed, the plant's own greenhouse gas emissions will represent only 269 tons of carbon equivalent per year (i.e. 90% less than the current facility), which will be fully offset using various techniques and technologies:

- Aquaviva will be fitted with 4,000m2 of solar panels, representing one of the largest solar farm projects in the Alpes-Maritimes Region,

- The sludge resulting from wastewater treatment will be dried onsite, then packed for reclamation as natural fertiliser for farming in the region,

- After treatment, the water leaving the plant will be able to be reused (watering of garden areas, Aquaviva's process water, etc.), which will also help save the basin's water resources.

With its "green offering", Lyonnaise des Eaux systematically offers local authorities Bilan Carbone carbon footprint analyses and action plans. Indeed, local public services account for 15% of greenhouse gas emissions in France. Water and treatment public services represent the third highest emitting local public services after education facilities and the general civil service. Since 2006, Lyonnaise des Eaux has already carried out more than 15 Bilan Carbone carbon footprint analyses. The company has set itself a target to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 10 to 50% on the facilities it manages on behalf of local authorities, while helping them to meet the targets from their Plan Climat.

Aquaviva is in line with SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT's Edelway offering, which aims to safeguard natural resources, protect biodiversity and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, accompanying local authorities, which are leading the way when it comes to meeting the environmental challenges of the 21st century.

Aquaviva will use ultrafiltration membranes combined with a biological reactor to treat the wastewater. This is the world's most modern wastewater treatment technology, making it possible to achieve higher purifying performance levels than required by regulations, while guaranteeing bathing water quality.

Built on the site of the current treatment plant, by the sea, Aquaviva will be perfectly integrated into its coastal and tourist environment, without any odour, visual or noise nuisances. The work will be carried out within the framework of the green construction site (chantier vert) approach, limiting noisy activities, cleaning trucks before they leave the area, etc.

The work will take place at the site of the current treatment facility. The main challenge is to build the new facilities without disrupting operations for the current plant. Lyonnaise des Eaux has therefore drawn up a schedule of work to replace the plant's various facilities one by one for the duration of the work through to 2012.
