Stockholm Water Prize for Sanitation

  18/09/2009
For the first time ever the Stockholm Water Prize has been awarded to the sanitation sector. The award went to longtime Indian activist Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak, who with the Sulabh Sanitation and Social Reform Movement, grounded a social movement of citizens with reasonable comprehensive approach.

While significant progress has been made in the area of drinking water supply, the development in the treatment of sewage and waste water stays far behind in what would be needed for achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

WECF's Dr. Claudia Wendland is happy with the news: 'This is the first time the Prize has been awarded to someone working in the sanitation sector. Even the fact that today in the European Union 20 million people live without proper access to sanitation is a scandal'
