Dutch Delta Design: Rotterdam National Water Centre

  10/07/2009
The launch of Dutch Delta Design 2012 took place on 1st July 2009. More than thirty partners, managed by a project centre lead by the Ministry of Traffic and Water Works, have presented their ideas. One of the most important is the establishment of a National Water Centre, which will be Rotterdam. The public, government, business, students and contractors will be able to meet and work together.

The visibility of water in The Netherlands will be improved, linked to the Rotterdam Climate Campus. Also the availability of other disciplines in Rotterdam is important: energy, climate, heath, design, economy and culture.

Eight Water Expertise Centres made a presentation: the water museum, three universities and Arcadis being amongst them, representing the east of the Netherlands. Also centres in the north, south and west were represented and gave an impression on technology that is being developed.

A different note was added by NOC*NSF Chairman André Bolhuis, making a speech about the opportunity of the Olympic Games in 2028. Improvements in infrastructure and cooperations should be made. Watersport and the watersector can work together for great results. The DDD2012 and the watersports organisations will make a study on how to realise projects together.

The Hague as host presented the ideas for a local Water Expertise Centre, focusing on the legal part of water.

A forum discussion between Rik Terwisga (Vitens Water), Harry van Dorenmalen (IBM) and Walter Amerika (Creatieve Industrie) put forward the concept of Djeevan Schiferli (IBM) that has led towards DDD2012. People should be allowed to think outside the box.

A white paper ‘Seducing the World with Water' was presented at the end of the meeting, A review board led by Chris Zevenbergen has considered business cases of Dutch Delta Design. It emphasises the urgency to work with water and bring knowledge together. Mr. Zevenbergen was presented the first copy by project director Erik Pool and Djeevan Schiferli. The presentation was followed by a flood of water, luckily the delegates were provided with colourful umbrellas.
