Sustainable Urban Drainage Consolidated16/04/2009 |
| The recent floods demonstrated that UK's traditional drainage techniques are economically and environmentally unsustainable. Therefore CIWEM welcomes WaPUG (Wastewater Planning Users Group) to the Institution, demonstrating our commitment to the promotion of best practice in the sustainable design and management of urban drainage systems. |
WaPUG, now CIWEM's Urban Drainage Group, has a long history of promoting best practice in urban drainage, influencing regulators on urban flooding and pollution risk since 1984. WaPUG's decision to become a larger specialist group for urban drainage led to the affiliation with CIWEM. CIWEM's enormous pool of knowledge and established links with policy makers ensure that when future urban drainage policy is being formulated, decision makers will start with a wider understanding.
CIWEM and WaPUG are committed to developing innovative methodologies and supporting the profession. This includes promoting technical excellence through Codes of Practice and technical guides, such as WaPUG's IUD Modelling Guide which will be available for comment by end of May 2009. The group is also dedicated to addressing the severe skills shortage issue by promoting the industry to the next generation of urban drainage professionals.
