Reducing Water Pressure

  08/04/2009
Nelson City Council (NCC) in New Zealand has developed and prioritised strategies for reducing water pressures in selected parts of its supply network. The speed of modeling in InfoWorks WS has allowed iterative testing of proposed solutions, from simple upgrades that make changes to a few valves to longer-term plans involving new pipes.

The model assists in prioritizing the infrastructure renewals and ensures that any new pipes will be sized to take account of planned pressure strategies so that flows will remain sufficient to meet customer and fire flow requirements.

Some customers in Nelson receive water with a head in excess of 90m (295 feet) and NCC aims to reduce values in these parts of its network without dropping the pressure too low elsewhere. One of the prime reasons is water conservation, as people generally use less when pressures are lower. Reduced pressure also cuts leakage and leads to fewer pipe failures, as there is less stress on the pipes. There are also energy savings in pumping and treatment.

Columbia Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade

John Dooley, director of utilities and engineering for the City of Columbia (US), talks about a USD40 million project for the city's Metropolitan Wastewater Treatment Plant. The capacity will increase to 150 million gallons/day (now 80 million gallons), and the pumping facility is to be relocated on the property. Requests for quotes are being prepared to be published soon.
