European Regional Session Fifth World Water Forum

From 16 to 22 March, the Fifth World Water Forum will take place in Istanbul, hosting around 20 000 water stakeholders to find solutions to attain sustainable water use. To prepare for this Forum thematic, political and regional processes have been set up which culminates in an extensive thematic programme during the Forum. A session of the European Regional Process is one of the highlights on Tuesday 17 March 2009, from 14.30 to 19.00 in the Sütlüce Congress and Cultural Center - Amphitheatre 2.

 

As one of the largest sessions during the Forum, and the culmination of the work of the European Regional Process preparing the Forum, the European Regional Session will highlight Europe's activities on the major themes of the European Regional Process, including:

  • Climate Change and Adaptation

  • Water Scarcity and Droughts

  • Finance

  • Sanitation

  • River Basin Management and Transboundary Cooperation

 

The European Regional session will highlight the Europe's water challenges (part 1) and the Europe's role in the world (part 2) as regards the achievement of sustainable sanitation for all and the capacity building on river basin management and transboundary cooperation.

 

The European Regional Session is organised by WECF (Women in Europe for a Common Future), INBO (International Network of Basin Organizations) and the EWP (European Water Partnership) and will take place on Tuesday 17th March, from 1430-1900.

 

The high-level panels during the session include the following speakers:

  • Jacqueline McGlade, Executive Director, European Environmental Agency

  • Doris Köhn Senior Vice President for Europe, Caucasus, North Africa and the Middle East, KFW, Germany

  • Jean-François Legrand, Senator and President of the County Council of Manche (Normandy), France

  • Matthias Kollatz Ahnen Vice President, European Investment Bank

  • Helmut Blöch, Deputy Head of Unit Water and Marine, DG Environment, European Commission.

  • Lazlo Kothay, State Secretary for Water, Hungary, and World President of the International Network of Basin Organizations

  • Salem Ould Merzoug, Former Ministry for Water, High Commissary of the International Organization for the Development of the Senegal River (OMVS)

Columbia Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade

John Dooley, director of utilities and engineering for the City of Columbia (US), talks about a USD40 million project for the city's Metropolitan Wastewater Treatment Plant. The capacity will increase to 150 million gallons/day (now 80 million gallons), and the pumping facility is to be relocated on the property.
