| With an increasing populating globe, where only 3% of freshwater is immediately available for serving human water needs, and where climate change is increasing insecurity in the sustainable use of water, awareness of and education for wise use of water is becoming a critical factor and will face tremendous challenges in the near future. An expert-meeting organised by UNESCO-IHE on 26-27 February 2009, in Delft (The Netherlands) titled "Water and Education, towards strategies with impact" is adressing this matter. |

While there is a range of organizations, institutions, materials and projects focusing on water-related education, there is an inconvenient notion that these are not well connected to make a change in the way society perceives and manages water.
What is the role of formal and informal education in this respect and what makes water education successful? What demonstrable impacts can be shown and what are the lessons learned. What appear to be successful concepts and approaches and how were these 'enabled'? What can we learn from other educational areas?
This workshop is one of five global, regional workshops, all with the following objectives:
This particular workshop will provide an opportunity to meet with invited colleagues from North America and Europe and to link different levels of education. This workshop will contribute to the realization of a Water and Education Agenda for the upcoming Water World Forum in Istanbul in March 2009.
Topics that will be covered during the workshop in different sessions are: 1. Tertiary education and professional development of water scientist, engineers, managers and decision makers 2. Education and training of water technicians 3. Water education in schools 4. Community and stakeholder education 5. Water education for mass-media professionals
