Watch Micro-algae Grow in December

  26/11/2008
The micro-algae growth process is visible during the International Algae Congress on 3 and 4 December 2008. A spinning tube-in-tube photobioreactor of Wageningen University will be displayed on-site. The purpose of this photobioreactor is to study the effect of design parameters on the productivity of micro-algae. The photobioreactor is surrounded by 60 halogen lights to mimic the sun on a summer day in the Netherlands. A short light path makes sure the algae have enough light to grow efficiently.

Algae reactor

The spinning tube-in-tube photobioreactor is a lab-scale photobioreactor. In this system mixing is provided by rotating the inner cilinder. The algae are cultivated between this inner cilinder and the outer glass wall, a gap of 1 cm.

Besides this practical photobioreactor example, the following themes will be dealt with during the congress sessions: legislation, science (algae as the new global feedstock source), production & processing, transport, investing & financing and practical applications.

Kyriakos Maniatis of the European Commission will give the opening speech of the congress. He will speak on the legislative aspects related to biofuels and algae. His presentation is followed by speeches on algae as the new global feedstock source and production and processing issues. The second congress day will mainly highlight practical algae applications. These range from renewable diesel, biofuels and algal biomass to coating components, aquaculture and water purification. Speakers are for instance Markku Patajoki representing Neste Oil Corporation from Finland, Nicholas Gill from Eco-Solids International from the UK, Carlo Hamelinck of Ecofys and Hans Feenstra of Akzo Nobel; both from the Netherlands. Thomas Byrne of Byrne and Company and Jeff Coombe of BBI International; both from the USA and Hans Reith, AquaPhyto from the Netherlands will close of the congress.

Besides the speakers mentioned, the entire congress programme happens to be very international with speakers also from Belgium, Germany, Italy, Sweden as well as from Egypt, China and Japan. Also the pre-registered delegates group is very international representing many countries worldwide. It will be interesting to hear the developments in this relatively new field from so many parts of the world. Delegates can expect to return with extra knowledge and ideas on the numerous opportunities of algae and will have enlarged their networks with international fellow algae experts.
