UK and Irish Energy & Environment Orders

  24/11/2008
Imtech has has recently acquired four contracts in different sub-segments, namely the refining of sludge for use as biomass for energy recovery, wind energy, reduction of air pollution in water treatment and energy reduction in residential districts in the UK. The total value of the orders comes to almost EUR61 million.

Sewage is treated in sewage treatment plants before it reaches the sea. This process creates sewage sludge (biosolids). By sustainably treating, cleaning and refining the sludge it can be reused as biofuel. This occurs in innovative biogas stations. Anglian Water Services (AWS), a regional drinking water and sewage company in East Anglia (a region north-east of London), has established an Asset Management Programme for this purpose. As part of the programme Imtech is providing the complete technology for this advanced energy solution together with its joint-venture partner Galliford Try. The contract contains the second phase of a multi-year investment programme. This concerns a combination of innovative sludge processing technology (including heating, mixing, warming, centrifuging, hydrolysing and pasteurising) and biogas technology. The biogas produced from the refined sludge (biosolids) is used to generate over 2 MW of sustainable energy, which is returned to the electricity grid. The first phase of the project was completed successfully earlier this year.

Reduction of air pollution
For Dwr Cymru Welsh Water and as part of the Dwr Cymru Welsh Water Management Alliance (AMA), Imtech is providing the engineering and complete technology for an air pollution reduction programme at a total of 33 medium-sized water treatment plants in Wales.

Strategy

Imtech occupies an increasingly prominent place in the fast-growing European energy & environment market, mainly in the UK & Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain and also in the international marine market. Imtech is undertaking a wide range of activities including sustainable exploration of energy sources, generation of sustainable and environment-friendly energy, energy reduction, lower emissions of harmful (greenhouse) gases, reduction of fine particles and delivery of clean drinking water and sewage. The share of energy & environment activities in 2007 amounted to approximately EUR750 million, or 22% of total revenues of more than 3.3 billion euro. Imtech's strategy is focused on reinforcing this prominent position.

Columbia Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade

John Dooley, director of utilities and engineering for the City of Columbia (US), talks about a USD40 million project for the city's Metropolitan Wastewater Treatment Plant. The capacity will increase to 150 million gallons/day (now 80 million gallons), and the pumping facility is to be relocated on the property. Requests for quotes are being prepared to be published soon.
