In order to cope with the increasing scarcity of raw materials and energy sources Europe has been making the correct choices with regards to resource efficiency and innovation. The water sector supports these choices and is able to contribute substantially. The use of hydropower is well known, however the possibilities to create energy from water are much more extensive. Heat or cooling from water can also produce energy. Likewise, the chemicals in wastewater can be used as fuel or to provide other valuable matters such as phosphate and nitrogen. The possibilities of water as a resource are multiple and fit closely with the European Union's policies on innovation and resource efficiency.
The organisation committee includes Peter Pex, European Affairs, Brussels; Raphael Lazaroms, Union of Dutch Water Authorities, The Hague; Hendrik Jan IJsinga, Vewin, The Hague; Eilard Jacobs, Waternet, Amsterdam (secretariat) and André Struker, Waternet, Amsterdam (co-secretariat)
