The disastrous Japanese earthquake and tsunami of 11th March, causing explosions in the nuclear plants, leaving thousands without homes, electricity and drinking water, and numbers beyond estimation yet missing and dead, is hard to watch. Japan is a special place with special people, especially for GIM International, but also for Hydro International and our other publications. We have been represented in Japan for several decades, and I dare to say that we have been the conduit for many Japanese companies to the world outside.

Visits to the Land of the Rising Sun have created bags of beautiful memories for several of our team. We are therefore watching the news carefully and with some dread, fearing the worst. We have heard from several readers, members of the editorial board and companies that they are safe and unhurt. That’s a relief, but we are all living in the knowledge that so many in Japan are not. For now, we wish you all the strength possible to overcome this disastrous time. Our thoughts are with you.

Durk Haarsma, publishing director, on behalf of the whole team at Geomares Publishing – GIM International /Hydro International/Waterlink International and Spill International
