Non-chemical Solutions For Hard Water Scale

  10/11/2010
Fluid Dynamics International, UK, has been helping farmers to solve hard water problems. The water supply to Hunter Farms in Tennessee, USA, is very hard (480ppm), and they had serious scaling in their chicken house self-watering system and their cool cells and egg room humidifiers. The drippers that provide drinking water for the chickens needed cleaning or replacement every sixty days and, with 7,500 chickens, that had become a daily chore. Scale on humidifier coils was reducing heat transfer by 40%, wasting electricity and causing coils to burn out regularly.

Farmers David and Margie Hunter installed a Scaletron in the water main before the chicken house. Scaletron uses a metal alloy, developed by Fluid Dynamics, that causes calcium carbonate to form tiny microscopic crystals which stay in suspension in the water rather than forming scale. No chemicals, no electricity. David and Margie are delighted: "It has now been 90 days since we installed the Scaletron, that's a third of the way through our current flock", they say. "So far there are no signs of scale buildup on the humidifier coils, and the scale that was previously found on the drippers of the self-watering system has disappeared."

It's not just chicken farms that can benefit from Fluid Dynamics technology. Anglo Irish Beef Packers (ABP) is one of the largest meat processing plants in Northern Ireland. They use steam mixing valves as an economic alternative to hot water storage or central heat exchange systems. The valves control the flow of steam to heat water instantly at the point of use. ABP found that scale from their hard water was forming in the valve and in the hot water outlet pipe, reducing water flow and temperature. They fitted a Fluid Dynamics Colloid-A-Tron on trial and found that it completely eliminated the scale problem. ABP was so impressed with the unit that they have ordered Colloid-A-Tron units for all their heat exchangers, boilers and condensers.
