Rebuilding Pretreatment Unit Wastewater Treatment Plant

  03/11/2010
A group led by Degrémont (France) has signed a EUR230million contract to rebuild the pretreatment unit of Seine Aval, the wastewater treatment plant located in the Yvelines, with Syndicat Interdépartemental pour l'Assainissement de l'Agglomération Parisienne (SIAAP). The Seine Aval site has been the historical wastewater treatment centre for the Paris region for fifty years. The plant treats more than half the flows collected by the SIAAP, with an average flow of 1.4 million m3/day, representing the wastewater from six million people.

The group includes VINCI Construction France and RAZEL, which will provide civil engineering services, the MERLIN and BERIM firms, SAFEGE, another SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT subsidiary, and the architectural firm Architectes Associés pour l'Environnement (AAE).

The Degrémont project meets the specific challenges of the SIAAP by rebuilding the entire pretreatment system: screening units, sand and grease treatment, improved air quality, while guaranteeing continuity of service for the three and a half years of the project.

The hydraulic study conducted by Degrémont, which included the construction of an experimental model, contributed to a technological feat: ensure optimised hydraulic flow for incoming wastewater flows ranging from 5 m3/s to 70 m3/s. The design adopted offers maximum reliability for the wastewater treatment process.

This major project will last five years, including studies, work, commissioning and an observation period.

The renovation project limits the plant's environmental footprint by using innovative technologies: energy recovery from the wastewater of the sanitation networks; reduced consumption of chemical reagents, and the re-use of rain water to produce industrial water. The site will be fully integrated within its environment and will preserve the natural landscape with the creation of an environmental green space. The very compact unit will be covered with a green planted roof to limit any sound or odor nuisances and blend with the natural surroundings, the forest of Saint-Germain-en-Laye and the banks of the Seine.
