Shortening Coastline to Prevent Damage07/05/2010 |

| The Dutch dredging company Van Oord has prepared, in co-operation with water management specialists Deltares, a way to prevent further damage to the vulnerable estuaries of Louisiana and Florida (USA). Bert Groothuizen of Van Oord suggested to create a dyke in front of the coastline to protect the ecosystem. |
‘Realising a sand deposit can stop the oil from flowing into the estuaries and we can realise this in a short time. In Dubai and the Rotterdam harbour extension, we have high deposit speeds. It all depends on the decision made. We can mobilise vessels quickly and the journey over the Atlantic Ocean will take about ten days', he calculated in a broadcast on the Dutch national radio. As the oil Spill already is reaching the shoreline, a total prevention is impossible but Groothuizen reckons the oil will form a threat for quite some time and prevention of further devastation requires attention.
‘People are worried about the long-term consequences', he said. ‘Our technology is specialised and for Van Oord and Deltares, this is an interesting showcase.' Van Oord and Deltares already have contacts within Louisiana.
