Water Law Summer Programme

  26/04/2010
Dundee's UNESCO Centre for Water Law, Policy and Sciences (UK) is organising the Water Law, Water Leaders Executive Summer Programme. This event is to take place from Monday 21st June to Thursday 24th June 2010 (inclusive) and offers internationally renowned speakers, and the opportunity to review and explore high-profile transboundary waters case studies, within a cohort of international water resource experts.

The approach includes practical exercises exploring legal, political and diplomatic factors that influence the evolving development of the rules of international law that govern the uses of the world's shared fresh waters.

Key topics to be addressed include:
• What is international water law and how does it promote regional peace and security?
• How do international legal frameworks support and interface with national decision-making and strategic policy development related to transboundary water resources planning and management?
• Who is entitled to use transboundary freshwater resources - why and how?
• How does international law reconcile competing claims over the uses of transboundary fresh waters?
• What diplomatic strategies and tactics can nation-states employ to secure the best legal outcomes in light of their transboundary water interests?

This symposium has been developed to interface directly with the career-enhancing opportunity to take the course for UK University accreditation as part of the "Water Leaders Water Law" Programmes. Credit can be gained towards either the Postgraduate Certificate in Water Law or the Masters of Water Law (LLM). By extending your stay over 7 to 9 weeks of the summer you will be eligible to pursue these options. For more information, please contact the WLWL Programme Director, Dr Sarah Hendry, phone +44 (0) 1382 382473 or s.m.hendry@dundee.ac.uk
